Georgetown French Market

This Friday/Saturday is the 8th Annual Georgetown French Market on Wisconsin Avenue between P & Reservoir Road from 10 am - 5 pm.  Now, you may be thinking that this is not really a "foodie" event, but several restaurants will be offering discounted food along with those stores offering discounted goodies! In addition, from 12 to 4 on Saturday (in the TD Bank parking lot) there will be Balloon Sculptures & a Caricature Artist, Alliance Française de Washington featuring live music & special prizes, Signature French Market eco-friendly tote bags on sale for $2 to benefit the Friends of book hill library, and Lobster rolls on sale from Clyde's of Georgetown.

Want to know what stores are participating? Check out this postcard on the Georgetown BID's website.

Review: Paulo's of Georgetown

Paulo's and I have a love/hate relationship.  I have been there and loved it, while other times the food has been sub-par.  This past trip was one of the former experiences, and I think most of my dinning mates would agree.

Instead of your typical olive oil and Italian bread on the table, Paulo's provides everything-breadsticks and a dip that is like a combination of an olive tapenade and hummus.  It sounds weird, but it is so good! I really could just take a jar of this dip home and put it on my sandwiches. But who comes to a restaurant just for their free bread?....oh right, I've done that before.

On to the main course, Paulo's is famous for their homemade pastas and pizzas.  The pizza pictured at the top of this post is their brunch pizza, which is topped with tomatoes, pancetta, cheese, and two sunny side up eggs.  Although this may not sound appetizing, every friend that has ever ordered it has raved about it.  I had the pizza pictured directly above, which had a red onion, rosemary pesto, goat cheese, oven roasted tomatoes, and pistachios.  This was really one of the best pizza combination I've ever had! Of course, this may be swayed because I my recent obsession with goat cheese, but I would highly recommend this pizza.

My disappointments in the past have been with their "homemade" pastas, which sometimes taste like old olive oil.  I know, I know, I'm being a bit picky, but when I eat my gnocchi I want it to taste like a fluffy potato pillow and not the oil used to keep it together! Still, although this place has got some great happy hour and brunch specials, the sometimes poor quality of food has left me rating Paulo's as only three stars.

Review: Bangkok Bistro

Today I visited one of my favorite Thai places in Georgetown: Bangkok Bistro.  It is located only one block from M Street and has TONS of seating. This is especially important for days like today when I went to lunch with around 14 people.  Every time I go here they are fast, efficient, and delicious.

One of the reasons I love Bangkok bistro is that the lunch price also includes a bowl of sweet and sour lemongrass soup.  It has just the right amount of kick and tang to get your taste buds ready for your main course.  They also put tofu and mushrooms in the soup, which gives the soup a bit more substance than other Thai restaurants in the city.

I ordered the Panang Curry (pictured top) and one of my friends ordered the Drunken Noodles (pictured below).  I wish I could say this was the best curry I have had in DC, however today it was slightly off.  I have had their Pad Thai here and can attest that it is quite good.  I have also had friends who have tried the sushi and have said it's not bad for a thai restaurant.  All in all, I would say that my experience with the quality of food at Bangkok Bistro over the years have been above average.

Overall, for $16 (including tax/tip) I got a great cup of soup, and fast, not amazing curry.  As far as value for what you get, I think this place is great.  A graduate student always takes the chance to break one bigger meal into two, which can easily be done here since the portions are so large. You can enjoy the company of your friends, enjoy leftovers later, and enjoy the fact that your wallet has been spared.  This new cost is $8 per meal, which is much more reasonable for a DC lunch.
